A&A Models 1/144 An-22 (1st Serial Airframe) is a plastic kit of Soviet heavy transport aircraft in 1/144 scale. The Antonov An-22, also known as the "Antey", was the largest turboprop at the time of its creation.The world's largest turboprop aircraft and the first Soviet transporter capable of transporting heavy military equipment directly to the front line. The kit shows the first mass-produced example, characteristic of the early production runs of this impressive machine.
The Antonov An-22 "Antey" was developed in the 1960s in Oleg Antonov's design bureau as a strategic military transport for the Soviet Air Force. It first flew in 1965 and became the largest turboprop aircraft of its time. Its four Kuznetsov NK-12MA engines with counter-rotating propellers enabled it to carry cargo weighing over 80 tons over a distance of more than 5,000 km. The machine was able to operate from unpaved surfaces and greatly enhanced the capabilities of the Soviet transport air force during the Cold War.
The first production An-22s, including the example shown in this kit, were characterized by a specific shape of the nose.cannon, a different cargo bay layout, and less avionics than later versions. Aircraft of this type took part in many military and humanitarian operations and long remained a symbol of the strength of Soviet aviation.
