At the start of World War II, the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet) found itself in a difficult situation. Its outdated Gladiators needed to be replaced with more modern fighters. Efforts to solve this problem through purchases abroad were only partially successful. Due to the 1940 embargo, the Seversky P-35A and Vultee Vanguard aircraft ordered from the U.S. were not delivered. Italian fighter aircraft—the Fiat CR.32 and Reggiane Re.2000—helped alleviate the equipment crisis only partially. Therefore, the Swedish government decided to no longer rely on foreign supplies and commissioned a team led by designer Bo Lundberg, working at FFVS—the state aircraft repair facilities—to develop a new fighter. The first prototype, designated J-22, took off on September 20, 1942. As early as the following year, the first production models of the J-22A entered service. Later, the J-22B version was also produced. In total, the J-22s served with seven air wings and were not retired until 1952. The J-22s were Flygvapnet’s primary fighter type from 1943 to 1946, when deliveries began of the SAAB J-21A fighters and, later, the jet-powered J-21R and the P-51D Mustangs and DH 100 Vampires. Detailed resin parts are complemented by photo-etched parts, white-metal cast landing gear legs, and decals for two J-22A-version aircraft. One of the aircraft is decorated with white stripes, indicating a training aircraft, while the other bears the unit’s emblem—a depiction of the devil—on the nose. The canopy is made of acetate, and the interior armored glass is cast from clear resin.
The resin parts require cleaning, test fitting, and gluing with a suitable adhesive. Paints, adhesive, and tools are not typically included in the package.
