1/48 J-3 ‘Cub Goes to War’

The Piper J-3 Cub is one of the most iconic light aircraft in aviation history. Originally designed for civilian use, it was adapted for military use during World War II as the L-4 Grasshopper. Its simplicity, reliability and ability to operate from short and unpaved surfaces made it indispensable for reconnaissance, artillery fire correction, training and wounded evacuation.

J-3 and L-4 aircraft served on all fronts, often with makeshift camouflage and only minimal equipment. Their pilots were often volunteers and instructors who operated in close proximity to the battle lines. The machines were so light that they could even be transported in the interior of cargo planes or landed directly in the field.
