The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt was one of the most widely used Allied fighter and attack aircraft of World War II. The D-28RE variant featured improved avionics and armament. Aircraft of this version were also delivered to the Free French forces, who deployed them primarily in Italy and during the liberation battles in France.
