The Dassault SMB-2 Super Mystère was created as a continuation of the French effort to develop an advanced jet fighter capable of supersonic flight at the horizon. It entered service in 1957 and became the first French production aircraft to exceed the speed of sound without the use of dive flight. Its aerodynamic concept with a distinctive arrow wing, modern armament and the ability to operate over a wide range ofweather conditions made the Super Mystère an important part of the French fighter squadrons of the late 1950s. of the 1960s. The type was also exported to Israel, where it saw considerable use during the Middle East conflicts.
