The Jagdpanzer 38 "Hetzer" (hunting tank) was a light tank fighter developed by Germany in the final phase of the 2. World War II as a rapidly producible and economically affordable answer to the growing need for mobile anti-tank defence. The design was based on the chassis of the Czechoslovak-built Pz.Kpfw. 38(t) tank and was fitted with a 75mm PaK 39 L/48 anti-tank gun in a low, well-protected casemate superstructure. Thanks to its sloping armour, compact dimensions and low the Hetzer was both a difficult target and an effective opponent for Allied tanks. It was produced from 1944 mainly at the ČKD plant in Prague and over 2,800 units were completed. The Hetzer was used on all fronts in the final phase of the war and its design influenced the post-war development of light combat vehicles in Czechoslovakia and Switzerland.
