1/72 I-1(IL-400b), First Soviet Monoplane Fighter

ICM's 1/72 scale model of the I-1 (IL-400b) offers a detailed rendition of the first Soviet monoplane fighter built in the mid-1920s. The Soviet airliner was developed in the early 1920s as part of the Soviet Union's efforts to develop its own modern aviation technology. The aircraft was designed by Nikolai Polikarpov and the designation IL-400b referred to the Liberty L-12 engine used, which was an American powerplant acquired after World War I.

This revolutionary monoplane had an all-wood construction and an aerodynamically advanced design for its time. Although the design promised high speed and better handling than biplanes of the time, the I-1 suffered from a number of technical problems, particularly in the areas of stability and structural strength. Eventually it was not accepted for series production and remained only an experimental machine.
