1/72 M8A1 US Landing Mat (100% new molds)
The ICM 1/72 M8A1 US Landing Mat is a model of the portable landing mats used by the US Army during the Vietnam War. These steel panels allowed the rapid construction of makeshift airfields and landing areas for helicopters, light combat vehicles and reconnaissance aircraft. The new moulded kit offers a detailed rendering of the distinctive mats in 1/72 scale.
Military operations in Vietnam brought new demands on the mobility and support of air units. The U.S. Army therefore used portable airfields that allowed for the rapid construction of temporary airfields directly on difficult terrain. One of the most commonly used solutions was the M8A1 steel mats, introduced in the late 1960s.
Each panel measured 3 660 × 560 mm and had a rigid undulating structure that not only provided load capacity for helicopters and light aircraft, but also effectively drained rainwater. The mats could be laid side-by-side in straight rows or in alternating formation, allowing for the construction of landing areas of different sizes to suit the needs of the moment. The installation was carried out by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and this type of surface became an essential part of the Army Air Corps facilities.
The M8A1 was most commonly used for the operation of attack helicopters, light combat aircraft, and reconnaissance aircraft. Their use greatly accelerated and facilitated air operations in the difficult climate and conditions of Southeast Asia.
ICM's 1/72nd scale (100% new mold) kits offer realistic representations of these landingmats, ideal as a complement to models of American helicopters and aircraft from the Vietnam War.
The package does not include the paint or glue needed for assembly.
