Academy 14204 - NEW BEDFORD WHALER (1:200) is a plastic kit of an American whaling sailing ship associated with the port of New Bedford. The kit also includes five boats.
New Bedford and whaling
Until the 1870s, whaling was a major industry in New England. Ships of this kind set out on very long cruises, often lasting 3 to 4 years, and sailed as far as the Western Pacific in pursuit of sperm whales. The oil they brought back was used for lighting and for machinery lubrication before petroleum became widespread. A typical crew numbered 20 to 30 men, and at its peak New Bedford had 429 registered whaling vessels.
Model features
The hull features engraved copper-plate sheathing detail on the underwater section. Molded sails and ratlines are included as well, helping capture the outline of a fully rigged 19th-century whaler. The parts are molded in three plastic colors: brown, black and white.
