Airfix 1/48 McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1 represents the British naval F-4K variant powered by Rolls-Royce Spey engines. Wider air intakes and a modified fuselage distinguished it from American Phantoms. This two-seat Fleet Air Arm fighter had an extendable nose gear leg to increase its angle relative to the deck during a catapult launch.
A12015 contains 285 plastic parts, clear canopy parts and Cartograf decals for three aircraft: XT868/R-001 of 892 NAS aboard HMS Ark Royal in 1977 with Silver Jubilee markings, XT859/725-VL of 700P IFTU at Yeovilton in 1968, and XT864/151-VL of 767 NAS at the same base in 1971. Both H5 and H7 seats are provided, along with extended and compressed nose gear options.
The stores include two underwing tanks and one centreline tank, four Sparrow and four AIM-9G Sidewinder missiles, four Royal Navy rocket pods, and four each of conventional and retarded 1,000 lb bombs. Select a loadout according to the instructions; these stores are not intended to be carried together as a single load. The finished model is 367 mm long with a 245 mm wingspan, useful measurements when planning display space. Airfix rates the kit at skill level 4. Paints and glue required for assembly are not included.
