When the first T-34-85s (equipped with an 85mm cannon) delivered by Plant No. 112 appeared, they were entrusted to the best units—the elite Guards battalions of the Red Army. However, during December 1943, they were still in training, so it is unclear whether they saw any action before January or February 1944. By that time, approximately 400 tanks had already been delivered to units on the front lines, which immediately took a liking to them. The T-34-85s gradually replaced the T-34/76s, and by mid-1944, their numbers had surpassed those of the older version. At that time, on the eve of Operation Bagration—the Soviet response to the Allied landings in Normandy and the largest offensive the Red Army had ever planned—they already made up the majority of tank units. And they were preparing for the final push aimed directly at Berlin. Before production really got underway, the 1943 T-34-85 models were usually assigned only to select crews, mostly Guard units.
