The Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program was a development project aimed at creating a new, 5th-generation, all-weather, multi-role combat aircraft to replace the existing fighter aircraft of the United States and NATO. The result of the efforts by a team of aircraft designers led by Lockheed Martin was the F-35 Lightning II. This aircraft utilizes “invisible” stealth technology and is characterized by its trapezoidal wings and the use of the most advanced systems, materials, and avionics. It was developed in various configurations designed for different roles, whether it be gaining air superiority, providing close air support, or attacking ground targets. The F-35B variant, with STOVL (Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing) capability, was developed specifically for deployment on modern aircraft carriers, such as the British H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth or the Cavour, the flagship of the Italian Navy. The United States Marine Corps, in turn, plans to deploy it on strike missions as well as in a ground-attack role.
