Italeri 1437 FIAT CR.42 Falco (1:72) depicts the Italian fighter biplane developed in the late 1930s as the successor to the successful C.R.32 Freccia. It retained fixed landing gear and an open cockpit, while introducing an updated structure with an alloy and steel frame covered with fabric and metal skinning.

The aircraft behind the kit

The CR.42 used the supercharged, air-cooled Fiat A.74 radial engine and is stated to have reached 400 km/h. Italian pilots valued its agility, yet the type also showed the limits of the biplane layout when facing faster and more heavily armed monoplanes such as the Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire.

Operational context

The C.R.42 also saw service during the Battle of Britain, when Regia Aeronautica deployed it as part of the Corpo Aereo Italiano. That makes it an appealing subject for modelers interested in Italian wartime aircraft beyond the more familiar mainstream fighter types.

What is in the box
