The Macchi MC 200 and its background
Designed by Mario Castoldi, the Macchi MC 200 marked a clear move away from biplanes such as the Fiat CR 32 and CR 42 toward an all-metal monoplane fighter. It was powered by the 14-cylinder Fiat A.74 RC 38 twin-row radial engine delivering 840 hp, giving the aircraft a top speed of 500 km/h.
Operational use and armament
The Regia Aeronautica deployed the MC 200 in Africa, the Mediterranean, the Balkans and Russia. Against Allied fighters it proved short on both performance and firepower. Its basic armament consisted of two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns mounted above the characteristically bulged engine cowling; later versions added two more 7.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns in the wings.
