Italeri 2818 is a 1:48 plastic kit of the RF-4E, the unarmed export reconnaissance member of the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II family. This variant combined the reconnaissance system of the RF-4C with the airframe and engines of the F-4E, creating a dedicated reconnaissance aircraft for export customers.
The Luftwaffe received its first aircraft in the early 1970s and became one of the principal operators, alongside Japan, Iran, Israel and Greece. A number of components and reconnaissance systems were also manufactured in Germany. Designed for reconnaissance missions in all weather conditions, the RF-4E relied on cameras, infrared sensors and a radar search system rather than fixed armament.
