The “Battle of Berlin” heralded the end of World War II on European soil. This massive offensive, launched by the Soviet Red Army after breaking through German defensive lines on the Oder River, was aimed directly at the capital of the Third Reich. The city was defended by soldiers of the Wehrmacht, the Waffen-SS, the “Hitler Youth,” and the “Volkssturm”; it is therefore no surprise that it was the site of the final—and at the same time some of the fiercest—battles of the entire war. Soviet forces led by Marshal Zhukov and Marshal Konev had an overwhelming numerical superiority in troops, vehicles, and artillery, which enabled them to force the city to surrender on May 2, 1945. The Reichstag building, the seat of the Reich Parliament, held immense symbolic value and became the stage for the final moments of the entire conflict in Europe. A Red Army soldier raising the Soviet flag atop the ruins of the Reichstag at the end of the Battle of Berlin is one of the most iconic images of World War II.
