Information about the original:
Based on the experiences and successes of the Italian Regia Marina during World War I. In 1935, Teseo Tesei and Elios Toschi developed and refined the Siluro a Lenta Corsa (SLC), which was more informally known as the “Maiale” (pig). It was a torpedo modified so that it could be guided underwater by two operators wearing breathing apparatus. It was designed to carry a high-explosive warhead under the keel of enemy ships. The modified torpedoes had limited speed, were equipped with a guidance system, and contained batteries that powered an electric motor, ensuring a range of 12–15 miles. A remarkable operation by these Italian Navy raiders took place on December 19, 1941. The SLCs were transported by the submarine “Scirè” to the heavily defended port of Alexandria and were able to attack and disable the Royal Navy battleships HMS Valiant and HMS Queen Elizabeth for several months.
