Information about the original:
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was one of the best aircraft produced during World War II. More than 20,000 were produced starting in 1941, and alongside the Messerschmitt Bf 109, it was the Luftwaffe’s most famous fighter aircraft. In its early versions, such as the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8, the fighter was equipped with a BMW 801 D-2 14-cylinder, two-row radial engine producing 1,700 koní, which enabled it to reach a maximum speed of 653 km/h. Over time, the designers capitalized on the aircraft’s successful aerodynamic design and achieved what can be considered its final evolution. The adoption of the powerful liquid-cooled twelve-cylinder Junkers Jumo 213 engine required a redesign of the aircraft, resulting in an extended nose. Luftwaffe pilots aptly nicknamed the D version “Langnasen-Dora” (Long-Nosed Dora), but as soon as it took to the skies, they immediately appreciated its characteristics and capabilities. The FW-190D was indeed capable of competing on equal terms with the most advanced Allied fighters, such as the famous P-51D Mustang.
