The JSF (Joint Strike Fighter) program was created to develop a new fifth-generation, all-weather, multi-role fighter aircraft capable of replacing the strike fighters of the United States and NATO. A team of aircraft designers led by Lockheed Martin created the single-seat, single-engine F-35 Lightning II. It utilizes stealth technology and features trapezoidal wings and the use of state-of-the-art materials and avionics systems. It was developed in several different configurations, and its mission is to achieve air superiority, provide close air support, and engage in attack missions against ground targets. The F-35A is the conventional takeoff and landing variant, the F-35B is the short takeoff and vertical landing variant, and the F-35C, with folding wings, was developed for use aboard aircraft carriers.
