Information about the original:
The Fairchild C-119 heavy transport aircraft served as the basis for the U.S. Air Force’s conversion into a close air support aircraft. This specialized variant was used primarily in Vietnam for night missions against Viet Cong supply lines and troop concentrations. Equipped with two 20-mm cannons and four 7.62-mm machine guns, the AC-119 K variant was particularly effective against trucks. Another version, the AC-119 G, was equipped with lighter armament. In addition, it was fitted with two auxiliary jet engines to enable it to take off from short runways even when fully loaded with ammunition. With the arrival of the more powerful AC-130Hs, these aircraft were gradually transferred to the South Vietnamese Air Force, which used them until the fall of the Saigon government.
