During the war, there was a need for self-propelled anti-aircraft guns capable of protecting soldiers from low-altitude air attacks. To this end, the hull of a Panzer IV medium tank was used as a platform for a quadruple 20 mm Flak 38 cannon, resulting in the Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind. Toward the end of 1944, the Wirbelwind was joined by the even more powerful Ostwind, which was equipped with a 37mm Flak 43 anti-aircraft cannon. The new anti-aircraft armament provided a longer range and was protected by a strong, distinctive shield mounted on a hexagonal turret with an “open roof.” The Ostwind could also be used with great effectiveness against ground targets while providing close support to troops on the battlefield. The few “Ostwinds” that were produced were delivered to the anti-aircraft units of the armored division and proved to be highly effective weapons in combat operations.
