Information about the original:
The “Biber” was the most famous “pocket” submarine used by the Kriegsmarine in the second half of World War II. The development of the Biber was exceptionally rapid. Construction began in February 1944, and the first units were launched just six months later. It was only 9 meters long and had a range of 240 km. On the surface, it reached a maximum speed of 6.5 knots, and 5.3 knots submerged. The Biber could be armed with two 530-mm torpedoes, mounted externally on the submarine, or two mines. Its crew consisted of just one person. The purpose of the Bibers within the Kriegsmarine’s strategy was relatively simple: to provide specific coastal defense against a possible and increasingly likely Allied invasion. From 1944 until the end of World War II, the Kriegsmarine received and deployed more than 300 Bibers.
