🌊 Historical Context of the Shade

During the wartime period, the colors of IJN ships varied depending on the shipyard where they were painted, due to different suppliers and manufacturing processes. The shade "Kure Arsenal Color" represents the dark gray color that was typical of ships painted at the Kure Naval Arsenal, located in Hiroshima Prefecture. This shade is often darker and cooler than the colours used in Sasebo or Yokosuka.

This specific dark grey shade was used on the hulls of most heavy cruisers, battleships (e.g. Yamato and Musashi during their initial deployment), aircraft carriers and destroyers that underwent maintenance or construction in Kure.
The paint has a matt (Flat) finish, which matches the appearance of ship paints at sea that have been exposed to weather and salt water.
