The Panzerkampfwagen IV was one of the most important German medium tanks of World War II and became the backbone of the Wehrmacht's tank units. Originally developed as a support tank with a short 75mm KwK 37 gun, it was gradually upgraded over the course of the war to counter the increasingly powerful Allied armour.
The Ausf.G version, produced from March 1942, brought a major reinforcement of the armament with the installation of the 75mm KwK 40 L/43 gun, which greatly increased its effectiveness against armoured targets. The later series, designated "Late", received an even longer KwK 40 L/48 gun and a strongerarmour, which gradually became a necessity when confronted with Soviet T-34s and KVs. This version was deployed on both the Eastern and Western fronts and represented an important step in the development of the Third Reich's tank technology.
