1/35 Festive dinner on the front line

Hot meals on the front line during World War II were crucial for soldiers not only in terms of nutrition and maintaining combat readiness, but also for troop morale. Regular hot meals represented one of the few moments of peace and normality in the midst of combat operations. The U.S. Army used M-1937 liquid-fueled field cookers to prepare meals, which allowed for frying, baking, stewing, and pie-making. These cookers could be installed in the bed of standard Army trucks, which became mobile kitchens known as "Kitchen Trucks."

The Kitchen Trucks had modified frames with extended arches to cover the canvas so that cooks could work in an upright position. Wooden benches, normally used to transport men, were placed on the sides of the hull in these vehicles and were used to store pots, pans, and other kitchen equipment. The cooks in the field kitchens tried to provide the soldiers with a hot meal at least twice a day. Most meals were simple but high in calories. However, on special occasions, such as holidays, American soldiers could enjoy something more special - such as roast turkey.
