The Jagdpanzer IV was one of the most successful German tank fighters of World War II. It was developed as a replacement for the still-used StuG III assault gun and was built on the proven Panzer IV tank chassis. The goal was to create a specialized tank fighting vehicle that would have a low silhouette and heavily sloped frontal armor. Although the original versions of the Jagdpanzer IV were armed with the shorter L/48 gun, it only gained real power with the introduction of the long 75mm PaK 42 L/70 gun, the same one fitted to the Panther tanks.

This variant was designated the Panzer IV/70 (V), where the "V" indicates the manufacturer Vomag. This type was distinguished by its characteristic sharply shaped front hull.
