Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H appeared on the battlefields in mid-1943 as the next development phase of the proven medium tank that formed the backbone of the German armoured forces. The H version, produced by Vomag in June 1943, featured reinforced frontal armour, the installation of side armour shields (Schürzen) and modifications to the drive and chassis. Tanks of this series were deployed mainly on the Eastern Front during the defensive battles after the Battle of Kursk.
