The Sturmgeschütz III Ausführung G, produced from 1942 until the end of the war, represented the peak of the development of thisweapon combining a low profile, heavy armour and a powerful gun. The October 1943 version produced by the Alkett factory included design changes such as the addition of armour plates (i.e. the Saukopf lafetta) and other modifications to increase the vehicle's survivability in combat. Machines of this production series were deployed en masse on the Eastern Front during the heavy fighting against the Red Army.
