The T-55 was one of the most widely used tanks of the Cold War, produced not only in the Soviet Union but also in satellite states including Poland, which produced its own variants from the late 1950s. The Polish version was characterized by minor differences in welds, equipment and production details, but fully conformed to Warsaw Pact standards.

The T-55 tank was known for its reliability, simplicity and low profile, which ensured its service in many armies well into the 21st century. It was equipped with a 100mm gun, diesel engine and protection systems including NBC filtering.
