1/35 T-80U M-2

The T-80 tank became one of the Soviet Union's most advanced machines when it was introduced into service in the late 1970s. It featured the use of a gas turbine instead of a conventional diesel engine, giving it high performance and excellent mobility. It was a breakthrough tank in its day, combining speed, powerful armament in the form of a 125 mm cannon, the ability to fire cruise missiles and advanced crew protection.

The T-80U version, introduced in the mid-1980s, brought significant improvements. The tank received composite armour plating complemented by ERA Kontakt-5 reactive blocks, a new fire control system and upgraded electronics. It was one of the highlights of Soviet tank development just before the collapse of the USSR and became a symbol of Warsaw Pact strength.

The experimental T-80U M-2 variant represented an effort to further enhance the tank's combat value through new protection features, changes to the turret and modifications to the internal equipment. Although this type did not make it into series production, it shows the direction that Soviet armour development was taking as it competed with the latest Western tanks such as the Leopard 2 or M1 Abrams.
