During World War II, the U.S. infantry often used armored vehicles not only to move into the combat zone, but also to quickly escape from danger zones. Tank riders, i.e. soldiers transported on tanks and armored personnel carriers, were common, especially in the European campaign after the Normandy landings. These soldiers traveled seated on the hull or turret of a vehicle, ready to jump off and engage in combat.
