1/48 AH-6J Little Bird
The ICM 1/48 AH-6J Little Bird is a plastic model kit of an American light multi-purpose helicopter designed for assembly. This variant was used by special operations units and is renowned for its manoeuvrability and ability to operate in confined spaces. The kit includes decals for four variants of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (160th SOAR), including helicopters deployed in Somalia in the autumn of 1993. The model measures 182 × 166 mm and consists of 215 parts. The pack does not contain the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
The AH-6J Little Bird is one of the best-known light helicopters used by US special operations forces. It is based on the tried-and-tested design of the MD 500 / OH-6 Cayuse series of light reconnaissance helicopters, and in this combat and attack configuration it has earned a reputation as an exceptionally manoeuvrable and reliable aircraft. Thanks to its compact size, quiet operation and ability to land in very confined spaces, it has become the ideal tool for rapid deployment, reconnaissance, direct fire support and the insertion and extraction of small combat teams. It was typically armed with seven-barrelled rotary machine guns and clusters of unguided rockets, which turned the small helicopter into a surprisingly effective weapons platform.
The Little Birds were operated by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), nicknamed the ‘Night Stalkers’. These aircraft came to wider public attention primarily due to their deployment in Somalia in the autumn of 1993, where they played a key role during operations in Mogadishu. For modellers, the AH-6J therefore represents not only a technically interesting type, but also an aircraft with a significant historical and operational context.
The ICM 1:48 scale kit is a glue-together model comprising 215 parts, with finished dimensions of 182 × 166 mm. The pack includes decals for four specific helicopters from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment:
- AH-6J Little Bird 90-25362, 160th SOAR (Airborne), Somalia, autumn 1993
- AH-6J Little Bird 90-25357, 160th SOAR (Airborne), Somalia, autumn 1993
- AH-6J Little Bird 89-25355, 160th SOAR (Airborne), 1990s
- AH-6J Little Bird 90-25361, 160th SOAR (Airborne), 1990s
The 1:48 scale allows you to build a detailed model of a relatively small helicopter in a striking size, which really brings out the open cockpit, armament and fine details of the airframe. Special operations helicopters typically feature a uniform dark colour scheme with subtle highlighting of the panelling and signs of operational wear consistent with intensive use. The kit does not include the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
