The Heinkel He 177 "Greif" was a German heavy bomber developed during World War II with the ambition of providing the Luftwaffe with a strategic bombing capability. The design was unusual, particularly in its use of two pairs of DB 601/603/605 engines mated to two single-propeller powerplants, which was intended to reduce drag and increase performance. In practice, however, this solution brought numerous technical problems, notably engine overheating and fires. The A-3 and A-5 versions represented an attempt to stabilize the design and expand operational capabilities, including anti-ship attacks and a carrier role for cruise missiles. The He 177 thus became a symbol of the Luftwaffe's ambitious but problematic development of heavy bomber aviation.
