1/48 MIG-21MF Fishbed J
The Rye Field Model 1/48 MiG-21MF ‘Fishbed J’ is a plastic model kit of a Soviet supersonic fighter from the Cold War era, designed to be assembled. This is an exceptional new release, as it is the very first aircraft model from Rye Field Model, a brand which until now has focused exclusively on ground combat vehicles. The 1:48 scale kit, according to the manufacturer’s specifications, also includes 3D-printed parts. The pack does not include the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21MF was one of the most significant variants in the legendary MiG-21 ‘Fishbed’ family. The MF version was introduced in the late 1960s and featured the more powerful R-13 engine compared to earlier models, which improved overall performance whilst retaining the lightweight delta-wing design. This variant was designed to standardise the aircraft’s capabilities for both Soviet service and export customers, making it one of the most widespread and widely used versions in the entire series.
Externally, the MiG-21MF retained its characteristic sharp nose with a central shock cone in the air intake, clipped delta wings and a high vertical tailplane – features that make up the unmistakable ‘Fishbed’ silhouette. The aircraft could carry a range of anti-aircraft guided missiles, auxiliary fuel tanks and a limited armament for attacking ground targets, which was in keeping with its multi-role use as both a fighter and a fighter-bomber. Minor differences in panels, antennas and equipment, depending on the production batch and operator, make the MF variant a particularly interesting subject for both historians and model-makers. In service, the MiG-21MF proved to be reliable, low-maintenance and adaptable to a wide variety of conditions. It served with air forces across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, and in many countries remained on the front line well into the 1990s.
The Rye Field Model kit in 1:48 scale is particularly noteworthy for modellers as it represents the brand’s first-ever aircraft model. Rye Field Model has so far made a name for itself with its detailed models of tanks and ground combat vehicles, often featuring fully detailed interiors, and the MiG-21MF marks its entry into the world of aircraft modelling. According to the manufacturer’s documentation (CAD previews), the kit features, amongst other things, a finely finished surface with engraved panelling and rivets, optional external panels and movable control surfaces, opening interior compartments with structural detail, a detailed cockpit and defined landing gear bays, as well as external hardpoints and armament for both air-to-air and air-to-ground roles, and 3D-printed parts such as the KM-1 ejection seat and wheels. The pack does not contain the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
