The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, also known as the "Warthog", is one of the most distinctive American fighter aircraft of the post-war era. It was developed as a specialized machine for direct air support, armor destruction, and operating near the front lines. Its distinctive straight-wing design, with engines mounted high on the aft fuselage and an extremely rugged layout, was designed to withstand damage and operate from less than perfect airfields. The 30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger rotary cannon is an integral part of the type, around which the whole concept of the aircraft was practically built.

The A-10C variant is a modernized form of the original A-10A. The modernization program has brought, in particular, improved avionics, the ability to use guided munitions more accurately, more modern communications and navigation equipment, and overall better integration of the machine into the current way of conducting air operations. Thus, despite its Cold War origins, the A-10C has remained a relevant aircraft in the 21st century, particularly where long endurance over the battlefield, accurate ground force support, and survivability in austere operations are required.
