1/72 DH.94 Moth Minor ‘Under the Southern Cross’
1/72nd scale plastic kit of British two-seat trainer and touring aircraft de Havilland DH.94 Moth Minor. This sleek low-flying aircraft was designed as a modern replacement for the famous Moth series and was used to train pilots during World War II. The 'Under the Southern Cross' edition focuses on machines operated in the Southern Hemisphere, including camouflages from the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), as well as attractive civilian versions from the South African Air Force (SAAF). The kit from Special Hobby includes quality mouldings, clear parts and decals for four interesting markings.
History of the real machine: de Havilland DH.94 Moth Minor
The de Havilland DH.94 Moth Minor represents an elegant chapter in the history of British aviation in the late 1930s. It was designed by John P. Smith to create a modern, powerful and cost-effective successor to the famous Moth series of biplanes, particularly the Tiger Moth trainer.
The DH.94 is an all-wooden downplane with an open tandem cockpit (some variants were retrofitted to the Coupe version with a closed cockpit). Propulsion was provided by a four-cylinder inverted air-cooled de Havilland Gipsy Minor engine producing only 90 hp. Despite its low power, the Moth Minor reached a top speed of 190 km/h (190 mph), and its simple design and folding wings made it popular with aero clubs.
With the outbreak of World War II, many civilian Moth Minors were requisitioned and assigned to military service, particularly in the RAF for courier and liaison duties. However, it gained its greatest importance in the southern hemisphere. Production was moved to de Havilland Australia' s Bankstown branch in 1940 so as not to hinder wartime production in Britain. The Australian branch produced several dozen units which were used for basic training of RAAF and RNZAF pilots. This made the Moth Minor a key element in the Allied Empire Air Training Scheme in Australia and New Zealand.
