1/72 Junkers Ju 87D-1/3 ‘Combat & Captured’

Special Hobby 1/72 Junkers Ju 87D-1/3 ‘Combat & Captured’ is a plastic model kit of a German dive bomber from the Second World War, designed to be assembled. It is a combined kit utilising the base model of the Junkers Ju 87G-1 from Academy, which is supplemented by a proprietary styrene frame with conversion and correction parts for the Ju 87D version, etched parts (photo-etched) and, in this case, 3D-printed parts for the siren propellers (known as ‘Jerish trumpets’). The pack does not contain the paints or adhesives required for assembly.

The decals offer four marking variants: an Italian aircraft operating in southern Italy, a German Luftwaffe aircraft in a winter camouflage scheme on the Eastern Front, and two interesting captured aircraft from Africa – one operated by the RAF’s 601 Squadron and the other by the US USAAF.

The Junkers Ju 87 ‘Stuka’ (from the German Sturzkampfflugzeug – dive bomber) is one of the best-known and most distinctive aircraft of the Second World War. The Ju 87D variant represented a significantly improved development stage of the type, featuring an aerodynamically redesigned fuselage, a more powerful engine and an increased bomb load capacity. It was deployed primarily on the Eastern Front, in the Mediterranean and in North Africa, where it carried out dive-bombing missions, provided direct support to ground forces and engaged in anti-tank combat. The Ju 87 made its mark not only with its swept-back (‘gull-wing’) wing and fixed landing gear with aerodynamic covers, but also by its legendary sirens, which emitted a piercing sound during dive flights, having a psychological effect on the enemy.

A special feature of this kit is the ‘Combat & Captured’ theme, covering both combat and captured aircraft. As well as aircraft in regular operational service with the Luftwaffe and bearing Italian markings, the model also features two captured examples used by the Allies in Africa – one in service with the RAF’s 601 Squadron and the other with the US USAAF. Captured aircraft are a very attractive subject among modellers, as they combine the original design with unconventional Allied markings and paint schemes, allowing you to build a visually distinctive and historically interesting model.

From a technical perspective, this is a combined kit. The basis consists of high-quality plastic parts from the Ju 87G-1 model by Academy, to which Special Hobby has added its own styrene frame with conversion and correction parts necessary for a faithful reproduction of the Ju 87D version. The kit is further enhanced by photo-etched parts for fine details and 3D-printed siren propellers, which ensure maximum accuracy of this characteristic feature. A wide selection of four marking variants gives modellers plenty of options when choosing camouflage and the final presentation, whether they opt for the Eastern Front winter scheme, Mediterranean livery, or distinctive captured aircraft. The kit does not include the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
