1/72 Saunders Roe SR-53 "Prototype"
KPM 1/72 Saunders-Roe SR-53 "Prototype" is a model of a British experimental fighter from the 1950s. It combined rocket and jet propulsion for extremely fast ascents to altitude. As a pure prototype machine, it shows one of the most daring design paths of the Cold War. The kit offers precise shapes, fine paneling and detailed execution of the cabin and the characteristic hybrid propulsion arrangement.
The Saunders-Roe SR-53 was a British experimental strike fighter developed in the 1950s, designed for rapid reaction against high-altitude bombers. Its unique design combined an Armstrong Siddeley Screamer rocket engine for extremely fast ascent with a smaller Viper jet engine for recovery and manoeuvring. The project was conceived at a time when the fastest possible response to the threat of Soviet bombers was being sought-but the rapid development of missiles and especially cruise missiles caused its cancellation after two prototypes were built. Nevertheless, the machine is a fascinating demonstration of technical courage and the blind lines of Cold War development.
The Prostějov 1/72 scale kit faithfully depicts the elegant silhouette of the SR-53 with its slim fuselage, high T-tail area and combination jet engine intake and rocket nozzle. Fine engraved paneling, quality moldings and a well executed cabin allow for a clean prototype configuration to be built as the aircraft actually appeared.
