1/72 XB-1 "Baby Boom" supersonic demonstrator

Brand: A&A Models

The A&A Models 1/72 XB-1 “Baby Boom” is a plastic model kit of the American supersonic technology demonstrator developed by Boom Supersonic, designed to be assembled. The kit contains 86 plastic parts, photo-etched (PE) parts, masking films and a decal sheet printed by Cartograf featuring two colour schemes. The 1:72 scale model faithfully captures the sleek aerodynamic shapes of this single-purpose experimental aircraft. The pack does not include the paints or adhesives required for assembly.

The Boom XB-1 ‘Baby Boom’ is a state-of-the-art supersonic technology demonstrator designed to validate key technologies for the planned Overture civil supersonic airliner. The aircraft was designed as a smaller, single-purpose prototype built predominantly from carbon composites, with a distinctly slender fuselage, a long, pointed nose and a delta wing optimised for supersonic flight. In January 2025, the XB-1 became the first privately developed aircraft to break the sound barrier, reaching speeds of around Mach 1.12 during test flights. A key feature of the test programme was the verification of so-called ‘Mach cutoff’ flight, in which, under certain conditions, shock waves do not reach the Earth’s surface, meaning that no sonic boom is heard on the ground. For model-makers, the XB-1 is of interest as a representative of the very contemporary era of aviation and the resurgence of interest in supersonic civil transport.

The 1:72 scale kit from A&A Models is a glue-up model comprising 86 plastic parts, supplemented by photo-etched (PE) parts for fine details and painting masks, which facilitate the precise application of colour gradients and transparent areas. The decals, printed by the renowned firm Cartograf, offer two colour schemes and are characterised by excellent registration and colour saturation. Given the characteristic smooth and glossy surface of the real-life aircraft, this model typically requires careful application of paint and subtle highlighting of the panelling, which will stand out particularly well against the demonstrator’s striking white and blue scheme.

The 1:72 scale allows you to build a model approximately 29 cm long, which will fit well into a collection of modern experimental and supersonic aircraft. The pack does not contain the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
