1/76 Land Rover 1 Tonne FC Truck GS Body
Airfix 1/76 Land Rover 1 Tonne FC Truck GS Body is a kit of the British military truck, also known as Land Rover 101 Forward Control. This type was designed in the 1970s for airborne troops and logistics support, where it excelled in its compact design, high payload capacity and ability to tow artillery systems. The 1/76 scale model depicts the typical cab offset above the front axle, the rugged chassis and open cargo area of the GS version.
The Land Rover 101 Forward Control was developed at the request of the British Army, which was looking for a powerful but compact truck to support mobile units during the Cold War. The late 1960s/early 1970s design featured an unusual cab-over-front-axle ('Forward Control') solution, which maximised the payload area while maintaining a small footprint. The vehicle was powered by a Rover V8 petrol engine and coped well with off-road use thanks to permanent all-wheel drive.
The Model 101 FC was designed primarily as a towing vehicle for the 105mm L118 Light Gun howitzer, but was also used as a transport vehicle for supplies, ammunition and personnel. The GS (General Service) version with a conventional hull was one of the most widely used and served in the British Army from the mid-1970s until the 1990s. It was deployed, for example, in Northern Ireland, during NATO manoeuvres and during operations in Europe and the Falklands.
