AK Interactive places IDF Sand Grey 1970s-1980s in the AFV Series of its 3rd generation acrylics. Supplied in an 18 ml bottle, it is designed for brush and airbrush, and the manufacturer highlights its high coverage, pigmentation and resistance.
After the Yom Kippur War, according to AK Interactive, more Israeli land forces were stationed on the northern borders and their vehicles received a darker sand grey that blended better with the greyish terrain of northern Israel. The current IDF Modern Grey was introduced in May 1981. The colour is part of the AK11650 IDF AFV Colors and AK11648 Middle East War Colors sets.
