The Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär, often referred to as the Brummbär—which translates to something like a grumbling or grouchy bear—was built on the chassis of the successful and reliable mass-produced Panzer IV tank. This particular tank saw extensive action in the Soviet Union, as well as in Poland, Italy, and even during the Battle of Normandy.
The Sturmpanzer IV is often referred to as the Brummbär, which roughly translates to “grumbling” or “grouchy” bear, but it is believed that this was an Allied designation, not the name actually used by the Germans themselves—they referred to their assault tank simply as Stupa 43, which was a direct reference to its gun. The Sturmpanzer served in four assault battalions, with Sturmpanzer-Abteilung 216 being the first to see combat during Operation Citadel in the massive tank battle at the Kursk Salient. These vehicles saw action in many operations throughout the Soviet Union, as well as in Poland, Italy, and the Battle of Normandy; however, as was the case with most German armored vehicles in the final stages of the war, there were never enough operational units available, and because it was impossible to effectively replace the mounting losses, their operational numbers steadily declined as the fighting intensified. Approximately 306 Sturmpanzer IVs were produced, and to this day, only three or four of these distinctive armored combat vehicles have survived in various museums.
