The LCM Mk.III landing craft was the most widely used LCM (Landing Craft Mechanized) during World War II—more than 8,600 were produced in U.S. shipyards. They were used by both the U.S. and British navies. Beginning in 1942, they saw widespread use on battlefields across Europe and the Pacific. Many hundreds of them participated in the Normandy landings in June 1944. The M4A2 Sherman tank, in turn, was the best-known of all American medium tanks. It was designed in 1941 as an improved successor to the earlier M3 Lee and Grant series: following the initial production run in 1942, a large number of Shermans were also supplied to the British Army. Ultimately, the Sherman became the standard Allied medium tank.
