Subject: the night assault on Pegasus Bridge

During the night of 5-6 June 1944, troops of the 6th British Airborne Division arrived in Horsa gliders near Bénouville in Normandy. Their objective was to seize Pegasus Bridge over the Caen Canal and secure the eastern flank of the Allied landings at Sword Beach. The speed of the assault and the holding of this key crossing made the action one of the defining episodes of the opening phase of Operation Overlord.
