P-51B Malcolm Hood 1/48

The P-51B Mustang was one of the key fighter aircraft of the Allied air forces during the Second World War. Unlike the later and now iconic P-51D model with its bubble canopy, the P-51B was originally fitted with a framed canopy, which significantly restricted the pilots’ rearward visibility. It was for this very reason that many aircraft deployed with the British RAF and the American USAAF in Europe were retrofitted with a British-designed sliding canopy – the so-called Malcolm Hood. Although this did not provide as unobstructed a view as the later bubble canopy, it represented a significant improvement on the original design, which pilots greatly appreciated in combat. Aircraft fitted with the Malcolm Hood proved particularly effective during escort missions for heavy bombers over Germany and occupied Europe in 1943–1944.
