The Douglas B-18 Bolo, introduced into service in 1936, was a medium bomber designed to replace the obsolete Martin B-10. This aircraft, developed from the civilian Douglas DC-2, was initially the primary bomber of the United States Air Force (USAAC). Although it was surpassed by more modern designs by the start of World War II, the B-18 Bolo was hoped toin auxiliary roles, including crew training and anti-submarine patrol missions.
The aircraft was equipped with radar and other innovations during the war, which increased its effectiveness in anti-submarine operations, particularly in the Atlantic and Caribbean. The B-18 Bolo thus contributed to the defense of Allied sea lanes, although its combat potential was limited.
