During World War II, the Boeing B-17 became synonymous with the heavily armed strategic bomber. The Boeing B-17F was also the first "Flying Fortress" to be produced using mass production methods. The most famous aircraft in this series was the B-17F, which entered service on July 15, 1942, with the 324th Bombardment Squadron in England. Its crew named it the “Memphis Belle” after the girlfriend of their pilot, First Lieutenant Robert K. Morgan. It became famous mainly because it was officially recognized as the first U.S. Army Air Forces bomber to successfully complete 25 missions in Europe, and subsequently became the star of a propaganda film shot in Hollywood. After this mission, the “Memphis Belle” and its crew received orders to return to the United States. It was later “purchased” by the city of Memphis, which turned it into a memorial. A total of 12,677 B-17s were ultimately produced.
