The four-engine Avro Lancaster was undoubtedly the most famous of all RAF heavy bombers during World War II. From 1942 onward, it formed the backbone of night bombing raids deep into Germany and earned its fame by sinking the battleship Tirpitz and destroying the Möhne and Eder dams. The Lancaster was capable of carrying a payload of more than 9,980 kg of bombs, the heaviest of which was the “Grand Slam.” It remained in service until 1945 in 68 squadrons of RAF Bomber Command and flew over 156,000 sorties. Of the total 7,300 aircraft produced, nearly half were lost. Today, only two airworthy examples remain, one in the United Kingdom and the other in Canada.
