From the end of the eighth century onward, Vikings from Scandinavia regularly appeared in Great Britain and on the European mainland in their drakkars during their conquering expeditions. These warships, perfectly adapted for seafaring and approximately 20 meters (66 feet) long, had rounded ends, allowing them to land or push off from the shore in any direction. Their shallow draft—just 1.5 meters (5 feet)—also allowed the Vikings to sail or row along inland waterways and rivers, enabling them to raid territories deep inland. With these fast (speeds of up to 20 knots) and highly maneuverable warships, also known as “dragon ships” or “langskips,” the Vikings ventured to sail considerable distances, such as to Iceland, Greenland, or even North America, as evidenced by archaeological excavations of ancient settlements in those regions.
