Information about the original:
This successor to the Ford Thunderbird debuted in April 1964. It sparked a veritable storm of enthusiasm. No other car has enjoyed such enormous success since then: Ford produced an astonishing 680,000 units in its first year. It was particularly popular with younger drivers: an economical, relatively compact car with an attractive design and a large—and above all, powerful—engine. The first model series, designated “641,” which was produced until September 1964, was followed by a slightly modified version with a more powerful engine. Starting in 1965, a coupe version—known in the U.S. as a “fastback”—was also available.
